Nissan Qashqai
After almost 20 years, the Nissan Qashqai remains the go-to choice for many families. The latest variety is arguably the best yet, featuring enhanced build quality, the latest Google-based infotainment tech and a plethora of clean, hybrid drivetrains to choose from.
Inside the cabin you’ll find a large 12.3in touchscreen and a funky digital driver display. All but the most basic models give you access to the Google Play Store, just like on an Android phone. This means you not only have access to Google Maps, but a plethora of other apps too.
It borrows its external looks from the Ariya EV, which gives it a distinctly upmarket appearance. Despite its popularity, it isn’t the most practical of family cars – its 504-litre boot isn’t the biggest in class.
Ford Explorer
With clever interior features, an efficient electric powertrain and great looks, the Ford Explorer has quickly gained popularity on Leasing.com. Depending on the variant you go for, you’ll get an official range of between 320 and 375 miles, giving it Tesla-rivalling levels of range.
It might only be the second all-electric Ford to hit the market, but it’s a much more practical proposition than the sportier Mustang Mach-E, reflected with its split folding rear seats and larger 450-litre boot. It also gets Ford’s Mega Console area between the front seats.
This large area is adaptable and offers enough stowage space to swallow a laptop or a handbag. The 15in portrait infotainment screen also tilts, allowing you to access a further “secret” storage compartment behind the monitor.
Renault Symbioz
The Symbioz is Renault’s answer to the Nissan Qashqai and, despite being a little smaller than some of its rivals, it offers fantastic value. Lease deals start from less than £200 per month, undercutting not only the Qashqai but models like the Hyundai Tucson too.
There’s plenty of space in the rear for the kids, while its 492-litre boot is almost on par with pricier rivals.
Whichever trim you go for, you’ll get a version of Renault’s clever E-Tech hybrid powertrain. It gets a gearbox that allows it to utliise electric-only power at lower speeds. The result? Up to 60mpg.
Tesla Model Y
We’ve recently been lucky enough to live with the Tesla Model Y, and it became clear to us why it makes such an excellent choice for families. With Long Range versions now offering up to 370 miles of range on a single charge, you needn’t worry about charging on long trips.
Inside, you’ll find Tesla’s signature minimalist interior, which includes a massive 15-inch touchscreen to control almost every aspect of the vehicle. The Model Y also provides a surprisingly spacious cabin with a flat floor and ample headroom for rear passengers.
For storage, the Model Y boasts around 800 litres of boot space, making it one of the most capacious family cars in its class. It's also packed with advanced safety tech, providing peace of mind on those family road trips.
Hyundai Tucson
The latest Hyundai Tucson has quickly become one of the most practical choices for families courtesy of its value offering. Depending on which hybrid option you go for, you get up to 620 litres of boot space – more than enough to accomodate prams, sports gear and the weekly shop in one trip.
Inside, the Tucson impresses with a tech-filled cabin, complete with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and intuitive infotainment that’s easy to use for both driver and passenger. It sits behind a single-piece glass unit that also incorporates the digital driver display
The Tucson also has hybrid and plug-in hybrid options, offering great fuel efficiency whichever version you plump for.
MG4
If you’re looking for an affordable electric family car, the MG4 stands out with its budget-friendly leasing deals and surprising practicality. This compact EV offers a range of up to 281 miles, making it ideal for both city driving and the occasional road trip.
The rear seats are spacious enough to comfortably fit two adults or a few kids with ease and, while its 363-litre boot can’t compete with some of the larger cars on this list, it should still be plenty enough to swallow all those family essentials.
The MG4’s interior comes with a modern touchscreen, and its driving aids make everyday family commutes stress-free. With low running costs and a solid range, the MG4 is a practical option for eco-conscious families.
Skoda Superb Estate
Not everyone wants an SUV or crossover. If that sounds like you, then the Skoda Superb Estate is a brilliant choice. Known for its cavernous boot space, it offers a whopping 690 litres, which expands even further with the rear seats folded down. The Superb provides practicality aplenty, all without a bulky SUV exterior.
Inside, Skoda has kept things functional yet stylish, with soft-touch materials and limo levels of legroom in the back. The Superb is also equipped with various engine options, including an efficient plug-in hybrid, which can deliver around 35 miles on electric power alone—ideal for local errands.
Volkswagen ID.7
The Volkswagen ID.7 is VW’s latest all-electric family car, offering a sleek design and advanced tech to make family life easier. Available as a fastback saloon or a practical wagon, the interior is bright and roomy thanks to a panoramic sunroof and spacious legroom that ensures a comfortable ride for everyone.
The ID.7 also provides a commendable range of up to 387 miles, so you can tackle longer trips without frequent stops. Storage-wise, it features a 532-litre boot and an adaptable interior layout, allowing families to bring along everything from luggage to sports equipment.
Hyundai Ioniq 5
Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 is an eye-catching, futuristic option for families who want style without sacrificing practicality. Range will depend on which model you go for, but even the 63kWh battery offers in excess of 200 miles and fast-charging capability.
Its interior is spacious and thoughtfully designed, with a flat floor that maximizes legroom and a modular seating layout that can be adjusted based on your family’s needs.
The 520-litre boot is generous, and you get additional storage options thanks to its innovative layout too. Its eco-friendly materials and host of safety features make it a strong contender for families seeking a sustainable yet stand-out vehicle.
Kia Sorento
The Kia Sorento is a large seven-seater that borrows some styling cues from the even larger EV9 electric vehicle. With multiple powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid, the Sorento offers something for everyone.
Inside, you’ll find a capacious cabin with three rows of seats that can easily be configured to fit passengers and cargo alike. Its 604-litre boot (when the third row is folded down) is perfect for family gear, and additional storage compartments make it even more practical.
