Vauxhall Corsa Electric
The Vauxhall Corsa Electric has been a great choice for those looking to transition to an affordable EV for a while, but prices have never been more enticing than they are at the moment. The compact hatchback loses none of its petrol sibling’s practicality, but adds a 45kWh battery pack and 136hp electric motor capable of up to 222 miles between charges.
It offers a great driving experience, with an ergonomic cockpit with impressive standard tech. All models get a 7in touchscreen compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which can be upgraded to a larger 10in unit if you plump for a higher trim level. It’ll take around half an hour to gain an 80% charge using a fast charger, and unlike some small EVs it feels just as comfortable on longer motorway journeys as it does in town.
Nissan Leaf
Compared to some cars on this list, the Nissan Leaf is starting to feel a little dated. It was one of the first EVs to succeed in the mainstream, but it hasn’t had an update for several years. That said, its impressive technology ensures it doesn’t feel like it has been left behind, while its range figures also keep up with more recent rivals.
The best bit? This is an all-electric family car you can currently lease for less than £150 per month. Proof, if you needed it, that a brand-new EV needn’t be an expensive proposition. Vauxhall Astra Electric
The Vauxhall Astra received one of the best facelifts of recent times , and the all-electric version is a smart family car that’s capable of up to 258 miles between charge stops. While that isn’t as much as rivals like the MG4 or Volkswagen ID.3, if you can live with slightly less range then you’ll save a lot on your monthly payment. Prices start from under £200 per month.
Its near-silent drivetrain makes it a pleasure to drive in traffic and on the motorway, while its 352-litre boot makes this a genuinely practical family car. There’s a great dual-screen display set-up in the cabin too, with a 10in digital driver display and 10in touchscreen standard on all models. Of course, the system offers smartphone connectivity via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Peugeot E-308
If you aren’t particularly a fan of the Astra’s sharp lines, perhaps the equally stylish Peugeot 308 might appeal. It’s based on the same platform as the Vauxhall, although range falls somewhat short at 217 miles. However, that’s still ample distance for most daily driving and weekend trips. Sleek and modern, it’s one of the most attractive looking hatchbacks currently available.
Peugeot’s i-Cockpit is standard on all models, with the 10in digital driver display configurable in several different ways depending on your preference. Depending on spec, you’ll get a raft of advanced safety features too including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking.
Mazda MX-30
With 124 miles of the range, the Mazda MX-30 offers the least amount of range on this list. However, it might just be the perfect companion for city driving if you’re after a quirky and distinctive crossover. Featuring rear-hinged doors like the RX-8s of old, it’s more practical than you may thing – great for accessing the rear passenger area.
The interior is pretty unique too, with a range of interesting design touches and materials that really help the MX-30 stand out. Of course, you get seamless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while Mazda’s safety suite includes things like adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.
