Volvo C40 styling

As the brand’s first electric-only model, the styling is rather different from other SUVs in Volvo’s line-up. From the front, it’s reminiscent of the XC40, but features a body-coloured panel in place of the grille giving it a one-piece look.

The headlights are more angular too, and there’s more significant changes around the back. Namely the fact its swoopy rear end makes it a coupe SUV. The rear light units follow the line of the boot and wrap around the rear panel.

You’ll also notice a lip spoiler across the rear windscreen, while from the back the roof line gets two distinct kinks. Combined with its glossy trim and large alloy wheels, it’s certainly a good-looking car that stands out from the crowd.

Volvo C40 interior and tech

The C40 can be ordered in a variety of interior trims, while the brand has confirmed that this is a “leather-free” car and that materials will be made from natural and recycled materials.

It also gets Volvo’s newest Android-based infotainment system and digital driver display, allowing access to apps such as Google Maps as well as Google Assistant that can operate in a similar way to Amazon’s Alexa.

In many ways the layout of the interior is similar to the XC40, although rear passenger room and practicality is slightly reduced due to that sloping rear roof line. That said, its 413-litre boot is complimented by an additional 31 litres found in the “frunk”.

Volvo C40 drivetrain

Under the C40, you’ll find the same tech and motors as we’ve seen in the Polestar 2 – that means two electric motors on each axle creating more than 400hp – enough to get the C40 from 0-62mph in under five seconds.

It uses a 78kWh battery pack that offers a range of up to 260 miles. It’s compatible with rapid chargers and can be charged at up to 150kW – that will result in an 80% regain from 0% in about half an hour.
