Say hello to the Volkswagen Tayron, an all-new model that will take the place of the Tiguan Allspace when it arrives next year.

Rather than a Tiguan with an extended body, this is a brand-new standalone model. Here’s everything you need to know.

Volkswagen Tayron styling

While the outgoing Tiguan Allspace was essentially a stretched version of the car, the Tayron is a standalone model and as such gets a more cohesive design. However, it still borrows many elements from the latest Tiguan, especially at the front.

The headlights and light bar within the grille mirror the smaller car’s design, and it’s the same story at the rear. It does however, have a different lighting signature to help differentiate it from its smaller sibling.

If the lights aren’t enough to give it away, it’s substantially longer than the Tiguan, and riding on large 19in alloy wheels, it’s significantly taller too. It’s aiming to take on vehicles like the Kia Sorento.

Volkswagen Tayron interior and tech

Inside, you’ll find the latest tech carried over from Volksagen’s newest models. The dashboard is different to the Tiguan’s featuring matte-effect trim. All models get a 13in touchscreen infotainment system, although you can increase this to a 15in unit.

The digital driver display is Volkswagen’s standard unit, measuring 10.25in and taking up the entire instrument binnacle. Obviously with this car though, what you care about most is space.

Aside from the Touareg, this is the largest car Volkswagen has in Europe. In the five-seat version, you get a massive 885-litre boot – that’s significantly larger than several rivals.

Even if you plump for the seven-seat variant, you’ll still get 850 litres of outright capacity with the rear-most row folded down. In short, this is a cavernous car that’s up there with the best in class for practicality – only the Skoda Kodiaq has it beat for boot space.

Volkswagen Tayron powertrains

There’s a range of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid models that’ll be available from launch. The entry-level option is the same 1.5-litre petrol as the Tiguan, and produces 150hp. Plump for the 2.0-litre petrol and power increases significantly. There’s two variants (200hp and 265hp) and the latter features all-wheel drive as standard.

Two 2.0-litre diesels are also offered, producing 150hp and 194hp respectively, with the latter coming with all-wheel drive too.

The plug-in hybrid utilises the 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor, and the most efficient version should manage more than 60 miles on electric-only power. That’s impressive for a large SUV.

The only caveat with the PHEV is the lack of a seven-seat option; the batteries take up space under the boot floor, so it can only be specified as a five seater.
