ChatGPT is a powerful tool, with the artificial intelligence chatbot sweeping across all areas of our life.

And now, Volkswagen has announced plans to integrate it into its models as part of an enhanced voice assistant system.

Set to be available on the ID range of passenger cars, the new Passat and the latest Golf (pictured), ChatGPT will allow customers to have seamless access to the constantly growing artificial intelligence database.

But what does this mean in practice? Well, it’ll be able to add lots of new capabilities to Volkswagen’s voice assistant, with the system now capable of answering general knowledge questions as well as controlling things like satnav and climate control.

Volkswagen claims this will be helpful on many levels, “enriching conversations, clearing up questions, interacting in intuitive language and much more – purely hands-free”

Volkswagen says that by and large though, nothing changes for the person behind the wheel – there’ll be no need to create a new account or install an app. You simply need to say “Hello IDA” or press a button on a steering wheel.

If the request cannot be answered by Volkswagen’s system, it’s forwarded anonymously to ChatGPT and the familiar Volkswagen voice will respond to your question.

ChatGPT does not gain access to any vehicle data; questions and answers are deleted immediately to ensure the highest possible level of data protection.

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for Technical Development, commented: “Volkswagen has always democratised technology and made it accessible to the many.

“This is simply ingrained in our DNA. As a result, we are now the first volume manufacturer to make this innovative technology a standard feature in vehicles from the compact segment upwards.

“Thanks to the seamless integration of ChatGPT and strong collaboration with our partner, Cerence, we are offering our drivers added value and direct access to the AI-based research tool. This also underlines the innovative strength of our new products”

We can expect more manufacturers to make use of artificial intelligence in the coming years. In fact, we had a go at predicting what the future has in store for the world of cars – check it out here.
