Toyota Aygo X styling
Despite being an all-new model, it’s clear that the influence of the existing Aygo city car has been used as inspiration, with the new car offering an evolved look. It gets the same vertical-style tail lights at the back, while the door lines and curves are reminiscent of the old Aygo.
However, it’s bigger in every sense: 4.9in wider and 2.5in taller to be precise. It’s certainly more of a crossover than a compact city runabout, and can be considered a downsized version of the new Yaris Cross.
There’ll be a number of contrasting paint jobs on offer, as well as 18in alloy wheels and an optional fabric fold back roof. The chunky body cladding and bumper inserts also help give it a more aggressive crossover style compared to the old model.
Toyota Aygo X interior and tech
Stepping inside you’ll find more evidence that the Aygo has grown up – its larger than before, so the first thing you’ll notice is the extra room. The dashboard is dominated by a large 9in infotainment touchscreen, while ambient lighting and wireless charging will also be options.
There will be plenty of customisable options on offer, with contrasting trim surrounds around the screen and the gear shifter. The central piece of the dashboard is asymmetric too, continuing the funky theme of the exterior.
Other tech on offer includes adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, emergency steering assist and more. The internal structure of the car has also been reinforced to provide excellent occupant protection in the event of a collision.
Toyota Aygo X trim levels
Four trim levels are on offer: Pure, Edge, Exclusive and Limited Edition. Entry-level Pure models are well specified, with all getting 17in alloys, a smartphone-compatible 7in infotainment touchscreen, air con and even a reversing camera. Edge (£16,495) adds a contrasting two-tone paint job, 18in alloy wheels, a larger touchscreen and climate control.
Exclusive models are priced from £17,715 and gain leather-style upholstery, a 9in touchscreen with navigation, wireless phone connectivity and parking sensors. The range-topping Limited Edition cars cost from £19,640 and get contrasting alloy wheels, a canvas opening roof, half-leather heated seats and a unique two-tone green paint job.
Toyota Aygo X drivetrains
The Aygo X will be available with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, which has been improved to deliver higher fuel economy and less emissions – it can manage up to 60mpg and produces 109g/km of CO2 (manual transmission).
It’s available with either a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox – the latter being the same kind of tech you’ll find in larger cars such as the Prius and RAV4 hybrids.
It’s not out of the question that we’ll see a hybrid or even fully electric version of the Aygo X in the not too distant future, either.
