Smart #5 revealed: Everything you need to know

  • yesterday

Smart has just revealed its largest SUV to date – the all-new electric #5 will arrive in 2025 and is capable of recharging to 80% in around 15 minutes. Impressive stuff.

Here’s everything you need to know about this upcoming model.

Smart #5 fast facts

  • Chunky SUV taking aim at Tesla Model Y
  • Borrows styling from smaller #1 and #3
  • 100kW battery offers upwards of 400 miles range
  • 800v charging capabilities allow super-quick charge times
  • Single and dual-motor models set to be available

Smart #5 styling

This is by far the largest car to feature in the revised Smart line-up. It’s a bold design, with boxy styling cues that are meant to offer a slightly retro flavour. In fact it can even be specified with an off-road package, which adds things like roof-mounted lights, a roof rack and a storage box akin to a Land Rover Defender.

The overall shape is notably inspired by the smaller models in the range, but it certainly offers its own style and sits alone in the range. The side profile are set off by a stunning set of alloy wheels that feature a “floating” centre cap just like a Rolls-Royce.

Smart #5 interior and tech

Featuring a high-tech interior, the #5 gets a total of three screens inside. There are two 13in displays spanning the width of the centre console and passenger side of the dashboard, while the driver gets a 10.3in HD display, as well as an impressive augmented reality head-up display that spans over 25in when in use.

There’s also a fantastic Sennheiser sound system on offer, as well as a clever AI voice control that should be able to answer any questions asked of it.

Being developed by Mercedes, everything looks very premium and there are some further clever touches including an innumerable amount of storage compartments. The rear seats have been designed to fold completely flat, allowing you to create an area for sleeping if you wish.

Smart #5 powertrain

Exact specifications are to be confirmed, but the #5 is likely to benefit from a 100kW battery which should give it enough range to cover well over 400 miles between charges. WLTP figures are still tbc.

The other impressive talking point of its powertrain is the charging function, with its 800v system ensuring super-quick recharges are a reality. Apparently it’ll be able to gain an 80% charge in around 15 minutes, beating many rivals.
