Mazda MX-30 electric SUV: Now available to order
Mazda’s new all-electric MX-30 SUV is now available to order, way ahead of schedule, with lease prices starting at less than £300 per month.
Three trims will be available from launch – SE-L Lux, Sport Lux and GT Sport Tech. A First Edition model will also be available, but this model will be limited to 500 examples in the UK.
Described as a car with a battery, not a battery with wheels, the MX-30 eeks a range of 200 km (124 miles) from its 35.5kWh battery capacity. This is not earth shattering, but that's not the point. With this car, it's all about the drive.
The MX-30 has been conceived with the goal of ‘Jinba Ittai’ at the forefront of the development process - a Japanese phrase for horse and rider as one.
With its unique interior and exterior design, the MX-30 hopes to live up to its MX prefix by also offering great driving dynamics. By integrating the battery rigidly into the vehicle body structure it enhances the overall body stiffness and provides excellent response to the driver’s input.
The new MX-30 is equipped with e-Skyactiv - Mazda's new electric drive technology. The front-wheel-drive powertrain produces 145 PS (143bhp).
In addition, Mazda has created an EV sound system which is synchronised to the motor torque and responds to frequency and pressure, so the faster you go the more noise you will hear. This has been developed in response to the importance of sound to a drivers’ perception of torque and speed.

The design of the MX-30 is similar to the new CX-30 SUV, albeit with flourishes we’ve come to expect from an electric vehicle such as a closed off grille. One unique touch it brings to the segment are reverse-hinged rear doors which it borrows from the former RX-8 sports car. This gives the vehicle a distinctive and elegant cabin silhouette.
Mazda’s Kodo design flows into the interior of the vehicle too, with a floating infotainment unit on the dashboard as well as raised centre column which gives access to climate control and drive modes. Mazda will also introduce eco-friendly materials to replace real leather, while environmentally sourced cork features in the floating centre console to provide additional storage space.
Standard equipment
Standard interior equipment includes a windscreen projecting head-up display, eight-way electric adjustable drivers’ seat, a colour 7in TFT dial display, a leather wrapped steering wheel and chrome trim accents.
The MX-30 First Edition comes with Mazda Connect, navigation, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the technology tally also includes Mazda Radar Cruise control and a driver’s knee airbag. Customers ordering a First Edition will receive a free wall box charger for convenient home charging.
Entry-level SE-L Lux gets 18in alloy wheels, as standard, while the Sport Lux adds options such as power seats and a keyless entry system. The top-of-the-range GT Sport Tech gets an electric sunroof, heated steering wheel, an upgraded sound system and a clever front wiper de-icer.
Commenting on the MX-30, managing director, Mazda Motors UK, Jeremy Thomson, said: “Our first all-electric Mazda heralds an exciting start to Mazda’s second century in business. A battery electric vehicle conceived and created with Mazda’s well-renowned focus on distinctive styling, innovative technology, driver focused dynamics and class-leading interior quality, the MX-30 will be a stand out addition to the rapidly evolving EV marketplace.
"Part of Mazda’s multi-solution approach to efficient vehicles, the launch of our first pure electric car is a milestone moment for the brand and a landmark moment for our dealers and customers here in the UK.”
Pricing
The vehicle will debut with the Mazda MX-30 First Edition. Limited to 500 examples, that version will cost £30,495 on-the-road - £27,495 inclusive of the OLEV grant. The SE-L Lux is priced from £25,595, the Sport Lux from £27,545 and the range-topping GT Sport Tech from £29,845.
This undercuts list prices for many electric vehicles, and should make it a tempting proposition for those wishing to go electric.
