Lexus RX styling
The revised RX gets a new look from all angles. Up front, Lexus’ trademark grille features prominently, although it’s slimmer than it was previously. You’ll find the same design is carried over into the front air vents, while the look is finished off with a set of angular LED headlights.
The side has been updated too, incorporating a number of new wavy lines that set the RX out from its predecessor. The quarterlight windows mould neatly into the body shape, further marking this out as the all-new model.
Round the back, the LED tail lights are now incorporated into a light bar that runs the width of the car. Below, the bumper is more sculpted than previously, with exhaust exits protruding on either side. Depending on the spec you choose, large 21in alloy wheels and gloss black trim pieces will be on offer (F Sport).
Lexus RX interior and tech
The old RX was due a refresh – particularly in the cabin. Lexus has gone to town in answering this, with the updated model now featuring a 14in infotainment touchscreen. It’s the brand’s latest system, and supports smartphone mirroring via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Beneath the huge screen you’ll find the controls for the heating and climate control, as well as a physical dial to adjust the volume. Lexus says the cockpit has been revamped in line with its “ergonomic Tazuna” design, making the whole car more driver focused.
For example the front seats have been redesigned to offer class-leading accessibility, excellent support and heating and ventilation. Synthetic leather has been used too, ensuring the RX is “vegan friendly”.
Overall, the comprehensive update ensures the RX offers a great alternative to key rivals, with standard equipment featuring things such as wireless charging at no extra cost.
Lexus RX drivetrains
From launch, you’ll be able to choose between three drivetrains – two pure hybrids and one plug-in model. The RX350h is the entry-level model, featuring a 2.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor to produce around 250hp.
The RX500h is the more potent option, despite only being a 2.4-litre unit. This turbocharged model produces 370hp and a huge 572Nm of torque.
For outright economy, you’ll want to plump for the RX450h+. This plug-in model features an 18kWh battery pack that allows it to travel up to 40 miles on electric-only power. It uses the 2.5-litre petrol engine and produces 306hp.
All models feature all-wheel drive thanks to their hybrid underpinnings, as well as a smooth automatic CVT transmission.
