Kia Sportage exterior
This fifth generation of Sportage marks a radical departure styling-wise when compared to the old car. It’s more sharp and angular than before. This is actually the first Sportage that’s been designed specifically for Europe.
Up front, you’ll find a huge gaping grille flanked by a neat set of headlights and tail lights. It’s not too dissimilar to styling we’ve seen on Hyundai SUVs of late and clearly takes inspiration from the EV6 electric car.
The picture you see above is of the International version which, while featuring a larger rear end and different side profile, gives us a good idea of how the Sportage bound for Europe will look – particularly at the front
At the side, the windows sweep gently upwards, with the C-pillar (the part between the rear doors and the boot) featuring contrasting paint. This is specific to the European variant, which features a more rakish roofline than the International car.
Changes are equally radical round the back, where you’ll now find a full-width tail light set-up and a completely redesigned rear end.
Kia Sportage interior and tech
Tech has taken a serious step up, which is quickly noticeable if you’re in the driving seat. Rather than a split touchscreen for the infotainment system, there’s now a huge unit that spreads the length of the dashboard and makes up a digital driver display panel.
Both screens are available in sizes up to 12.3in. It’s a similar theme to what we’ve seen manufacturers like Mercedes do in recent years, and all the key controls for the stereo, satnav and driver aids are operated via the right-hand side of the screen that’s shared with the passenger.
Improved ergonomics and practicality is high on the agenda too; there’s more rear leg room and boot space than before, while there’s some handy features for the front passengers including coat and bag hooks, along with plenty of storage too.
UK customers will be able to choose from six different variants, with all models featuring 17in alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, an 8in touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility and LED headlights.
Trim levels start with 2, while GT-Line adds 19in alloy wheels, a larger 12.3in touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and a smart entry system. 4 adds things like a panoramic sunroof and wireless smartphone charging, while range-topping GT-LINE S gets 19in alloy wheels, a powered tailgate and electrically adjustable heated and ventilated front seats.
Kia Sportage engines
From launch, the Sportage will be available with a number of enhanced hybrid units – including mild-hybrid, a self-charging hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. The self-charging hybrid uses a 1.6-litre petrol engine and a 44kW electric motor, producing a combined output of around 230hp.
The 1.6-litre engine is available without the full hybrid tech too, although it still makes use of mild-hybrid technology. It will be available with either 150hp or 180hp. Diesels remain on offer too, with the 1.6-litre units available with either 116hp or 136hp.
The plug-in hybrid option is the most potent, producing a combined 265hp. It uses a 66kW electric motor and a 13.8kWh battery. Its all-electric range is 43 miles, while CO2 emissions stand at just 25g/km, allowing an 8 per cent BIK rate for 2022/23.
All models feature either a seven-speed automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox.
Kia Sportage safety
Kia emphasises the safety capabilities of the latest Sportage, with the design based around a new structure with exceptionally high torsional rigidity. The company’s advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) helps drivers avoid potential hazards and includes a forward collision avoidance system.
Other features include a highway driving assistance system that sets the distance and speed from the vehicle ahead on motorways. The satnav can also use real-time data to help drivers avoid a collision due to traffic and other hazards on the road.
A Terrain mode is also on offer, which optimises the Sportage’s systems for a host of road conditions including snow, mud and sand.
