Hyundai Bayon styling

Being the smallest car in Hyundai’s SUV line-up means that the Bayon is based on the platform of the i20 hatchback. It has been proportioned accordingly, although there’s lots of carryovers from the brand’s larger vehicles.

This is most notable up front, where you’ll find an angular set of headlights, with DRL and indicators separated from the main unit and sitting in a slat on the bonnet line.

There’s a big grille too, while down the sides you’ll find sharply creased doors and a range of optional new alloy wheel designs (16in and 17in). The Bayon will be offered in a number of two-tone paints, which will help it stand out from the crown.

At the rear, the vertical tail lights resemble a boomerang design, while a beefy bumper includes reversing lights and reflectors. Silver cladding on both bumpers adds a sporty touch. The Bayon is available in 9 colours, with a standard 2 tone finish with Phantom Black roof on Ultimate models

Hyundai Bayon interior and tech

The Bayon is based on the i20 and, while you can’t really tell that’s the case on the outside, the interior has been pretty much carried over unchanged.

There’s a 10in driver display that replaces traditional dials and an impressive 8in infotainment touchscreen. The system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a larger 10.25in unit is also available as an optional extra.

There’s a focus on practicality with the new Bayon, with this car offering substantially more rear passenger space than many competitors. However, boot space is a rather average 411 litres – there are better crossovers to consider if load lugging is a priority.

Hyundai Bayon trim levels

The Bayon will be available in 3 specification levels: SE Connect, Premium and Ultimate, and all are well equipped. The SE Connect includes 16in alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, air conditioning cruise control, rear parking sensors with review-view camera, smartphone integration and an impressive 10in digital driver display.

The Premium adds features like larger 17in alloy wheels, automatic climate control, electric door mirrors, a larger 10in infotainment system touchscreen with satnav, wireless charging and an automatically dipping rear-view mirror.

Hyundai Bayon drivetrains

Like the i20, from launch the Bayon will be available with a range of petrol engines that use mild-hybrid technology. These 1.0-litre units use a 48V system to reduce emissions and improve economy.

Two are available, producing 100hp and 120hp respectively. As standard, the Bayon will feature a six-speed “intelligent” manual gearbox, but a seven-speed automatic unit will be available on some of the engine configurations.
