Earlier this year, the Tesla Model Y was named as our Best Electric Vehicle in the Leasing.com Awards. Despite the market filling up nicely with EVs of all shapes and sizes, the Model Y still stood out with an impressive range, excellent charging capabilities and affordable lease pricing.

Getting hands-on quality time with cars is the only way to really assess them, and at the Leasing.com office we’ve been lucky enough to recently sample the latest Model Y in Dual Motor form.

After spending a week with the latest model, we’ve come up with five compelling reasons why the Model Y should still be on your shortlist if you’re after an EV.

1. The value

Despite Tesla being seen as a premium brand, the value its current models offer to UK customers is rather startling when you look at the specs. You see, you should think of Tesla as more than a car brand; it’s a technology brand first and foremost.

The amount of impressive hardware and software that the Model Y offers the average car consumer would have been unthinkable just a few years ago, but Tesla really have democratised battery tech and self-driving tech and brought it to the masses.

With its SUV proportions and clean, premium interior, the Model Y in particular offers consumers fantastic value for money; it’s not only one of the most usable EVs, but it’s one of the most practical too.

2. The tech

As we said, Tesla is renowned for its innovation, and the Model Y comes brimming with tech that make life behind the wheel easier. Let’s take the Autopilot system for starters.

It’s one of the most advanced semi-autonomous driving aids currently on offer, and supports over the air updates and, unlike make rivals, you don’t have to cover the brake and accelerator when in traffic – it simply drives itself.

When out of traffic, the self-driving package will automatically scan and change lanes and park itself automatically. All unbelievably advanced stuff for such an affordable car.

3. The performance

Electric vehicles are no longer just about efficiency—they’re about performance, too. Whichever Model Y you plump for, they deliver thrilling acceleration that few other cars can offer. It’s not quite as sporty feeling behind the wheel as the Model 3, but handling is fantastic and rivals most other vehicles in its class.

Plump for a Long Range model and you’ll get from 0-60mph in 4.8 seconds, while the Performance variant slashes this to 3.5 seconds which is quick enough to worry the odd supercar. The all-wheel-drive system provides excellent traction in all weather conditions, making it a great choice for UK roads too.

4. The charging

Range anxiety is often a concern with electric vehicles, but the Tesla Model Y puts those fears to rest. The Long Range model offers an impressive 330 miles on a single charge, while the Performance version delivers around 303 miles. This range is more than sufficient for most daily commutes and long-distance drives.

Additionally, Tesla’s Supercharger network is one of the best in the world, allowing you to charge your Model Y quickly and conveniently. With thousands of Supercharger stations across the UK and Europe, road trips in a Tesla are not just possible, but they’re enjoyable too. 20240821_134128

This was a major difference we found between the Model Y and other EVs we’ve sampled – the charging experience is seamless.

5. The practicality

The Tesla Model Y isn’t just a great car to drive—it’s also highly practical. Its spacious interior offers ample room for passengers and cargo, making it an ideal choice for families or those who need extra space.

The Model Y can comfortably seat five adults, with optional third-row seating available for those who need even more capacity.

Tesla Model Y practicality

The rear seats fold flat to create a massive 1,900 litres of cargo space, more than enough for most needs.

The Model Y also features a front trunk, or “frunk,” providing additional storage space. Whether you’re hauling groceries, luggage, or outdoor gear, the Model Y has you covered.
