BMW 5 Series styling
It’s clear this 5 Series is an all-new model, with fresh styling from every angle. The edges are softer than the outgoing model, although the large trademark kidney grille and a sharp set of headlights remain.
The lower area of the doors sweep neatly up, with the line continuing into the rear quarter and bumper panels. A whole host of alloy wheel options will be offered, while the M Sport trim level will offer extras such as gloss black trim.
The i5 EV looks pretty much identical to the standard petrol car, and aims to offer an alternative to models like the Mercedes-Benz EQE and Audi A6 e-etron.
BMW 5 Series interior and tech
On the inside, a raft of updates make it clear that this is an all-new model. The cabin is as driver-focused as ever, but changes include a vast 14.9in touchscreen infotainment system with BMW’s latest iDrive tech. It’s compatible with Android Auto and Apply CarPlay and dominates the dashboard.
It moulds neatly into the 12in digital driver display, that offers vivid graphics and customisable displays. It’s a stunning system which on the looks front, can rival the likes of Mercedes at least. The technology itself is impressive too, with the i5 even featuring a games console that you can play as it’s charging.
Standard spec is impressive across all models. The 5 Series features faux-leather interior and heated seats across all models, while the near gear selector in the centre console reminds you you’re in something a little special.
BMW 5 Series drivetrains
From launch, you’ll be able to spec the 5 Series with a singular petrol engine – a 2.0-litre unit with mild-hybrid tech. This 520i model produces 210hp and will get from 0-62mph in around 7.5 seconds. Further petrol-hybrid models are set to arrive next year, with 530e and 550e featuring plug-in drivetrains.
The all-electric i5 will be available in eDrive 40 and M60 form. They use the same battery pack, with the eDrive offering up to 360 miles of range – that’s around the same in the real world as rivals like Mercedes’ EQE. The more potent M60 sacrifices range for performance, but it can still manage 320 miles between recharges.
