BMW 4 Series range tweaked for 2024

BMW has given its 4 Series line-up a few tweaks for 2024, ushering in design changes, tech upgrades and a more potent M4 model.

Here’s everything you need to know.

BMW 4 Series styling

The 4 Series is still relatively fresh, so changes aren’t exactly drastic. Up front there is a new set of headlights that, while appearing very similar, actually carry a different lighting signature, giving these LED units a more modern look.

Depending on spec, you’ll also get a fresh grille design – the range-topping model now features a slatted design rather than the more intricate grille design on the current model.

At the back, the tail lights have also been changed, and appear more elongated than before. Combined with a set of fresh bumpers and a range of updated alloy wheel designs, it’s just about enough to tell the new car apart from its predecessor.

Changes to the M4, which already gets a beefier body kit, are less noticeable.

A number of new features appear on the inside, including a new steering wheel, revised trim finishes and a fresh infotainment system. The steering wheel has been taken directly from the latest 5 Series range, while the large curved infotainment unit is also familar.

The system has been updated, and it gives off an imposing look taking up more than half the width of the dashboard when combined with the digital driver display.

BMW 4 Series drivetrains

Arguably the most noticeable difference is this new model no longer features a diesel engine in its line-up. That means only a host of petrol units remain.

The range kicks off with the 420i, which uses a 2.0-litre engine to get the car from 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds. Those after more power should go for the M440i. With a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, this ups performance significantly, with 0-62mph achievable in under five seconds for both the coupe and convertible.

As ever, the halo M4 model will also be offered. It makes use of the same unit found in the 440i, but ups power to an impressive 530hp – that’s around 20hp more than the outgoing model, and gives the coupe a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds.

All M4 models feature all-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox, and it’ll be available in both coupe and convertible form.
