While its quality and badge certainly live up to the four-ringed badge, it’s the smallest SUV the company has offered to date, and is more akin size-wise to the Citroen C4 Cactus than its Q3 and Q5 siblings.

Four trims from launch

At launch, there are three trim levels for the Q2, plus an ‘Edition #1’ range-topping special edition to commemorate the car’s launch. Priced from £20,230, entry-level SE specification features Bluetooth connectivity, integrated smartphone applications, 16in alloy wheels and air conditioning.

Mid-range Sport trim adds a £1,550 premium, but comes with 17in alloy wheels, cruise control, sport seats, integrated navigation system with seven-inch central display screen. Audi’s innovative MMI driver’s display is also available.

From £26,180, S-Line trim is the current range-topping variant, and adds accoutrements such as 18in alloy wheels, LED headlamps and rear lights, dynamic sweeping rear indicators, brushed aluminium trim, front half-leather seats upholstered with “ S” and a multifunction leather sports steering wheel.

Options include Audi’s brilliant Virtual Cockpit system – also used in the latest TT – which places a 12.3-inch digital screen that replaces analogue speed and tachometers.

It still displays the necessary info, but allows the driver to operate the sat-nav more clearly, or adjust the stereo and trip computer as easily as possible.

There’s driver assistance packages on offer too, which include Adaptive cruise control, Stop&Go Traffic Jam Assist, Audi Active Lane Assist, cross-traffic assist and an emergency braking system.

The ‘Edition #1’ is a one-off trim and will be priced from £31,170. It’ll include 19in sport alloy wheels, S-Line body kit, contrasting matte grey bumpers, black exterior highlights, full Nappa leather upholstery and ambient interior lighting.

Wide-ranging engine line up

A wide-ranging engine line up kicks off with the frugal 1.0-litre TFSI petrol engine seen in many of Volkswagen Group’s newest models, including the new A3.

A 1.4-litre TSI is also available and can get to 62mph from rest in under 9 seconds, but it’s the  2.0-litre TFSI you’ll want if you value power and refinement over efficiency.

Elsewhere, diesel fans can choose between the 1.6- and 2.0-litre TDI engines which produce 108 and 148bhp respectively which bot offer the lowest running costs on the options list.

Minus the 1.0-litre petrol, all power plants are four cylinder units and can be specced with a six-speed manual or a sevel speed DSG automatic gearbox.

Audi’s head of design Marc Lichte commented: “In the Q2, we have developed a distinctively geometric form language with model-specific design characteristics. The car exhibits an independent character within the Q family.”
